im not so familiar with blender but im very very familiar with Maya. Does blender not have an edge-loop making tool? In maya I simply press Ctrl+Shift+x and then hold Ctrl and click to make a full edge loop around an object.

Here's an example pic of it being used. Try look for the "Multi-cut" tool.
