It's not suffering it's adversity. And it is one keystone to character building. If you only face someone with adversity and deprive them of the other aspects of character building they will not build character.
Having a good life may reduce suffering but it does not reduce adversity, in fact it increases it significantly. The problem in thinking here is that you can only imagine yourself in a relationship that blankets you from adversity. That's death.
In reality a good relationship is tough. It requires a significant amount of emotional intellect and vulnerability. By the very act of having something to lose you are increasing your exposure to adversity significantly. This is why relationships do not work out for most people because most people are malformed and misinformed.
At its core life is adversity. There is no way to exist without it. Comfort is just as important for growth as adversity is.
