Unless you're a sparkledog no one cares. Just make a basic popen. Find 2 colors that you like, a mane and cutiemark. You don't have to stick to it, maybe make one that you like more in the future if you feel like it. Basic popens have a charm to them. The only popens I see called ugly are the ones with TOO much stuff going on.
As for controls I've played for like 2.5 years and I still don't know what most of them do. Everyone knows they're complicated and will understand
