Any gachafag that tries to sell you on story is a retard.
These games have by far the biggest case of ludonarrative dissonance imaginable, your party of characters is not reflected in the story at all and often times you'll be using units hours and hours before you even canonically meet them in the story.
Imagine playing FF7 but you just have Cid there in every battle during the Midgar section - no one acknowledges him and you still have the scene where you meet him in Rocket Town, but once gameplay switches over there he is every time.
And let's not even get into the amount of one time events that further the story too but are no longer available.
