Stop pretending you're a triple-A studio executive. "Outdated game design" is only relevant if your goal is to make a mass market game that appeals to as many people as possible. Last time I checked none of us here are managing multi-million dollar projects that need to recuperate their production costs.
Indie developers can afford to target niche genres like traditional ImSims because there's less on the line. There are players out there who want more ImSims, and if someone makes a new ImSim they're likely to play it. If you want to be like Marnix, pretending you're managing a real studio and putting profits ahead of everything else, then go ahead. To me that seems like cucking your creativity for no reason. The odds of payoff are so slim that you'd be better off making whatever you want to make.
