The mystery regarding Stan and the journals and all was definitely not as big-brained as many made it out to be, but Gravity Falls's bread & butter was its characters. THAT'S what makes it stand apart from a lot of cartoons that tried riding its coattails afterward. Alex Hirsch understood the importance of having characters the audience could care about in order for the major plot beats to have their intended impact. He also was able to naturally pull from his experiences growing up with a twin as well as the conflicting feelings that come with "growing out of one's childhood," particularly during the summer. It captures that awkward stage of "tweenhood" really well. That's what also helps give the show an extra edge that more recent Disney Channel cartoons tend to lack since they skew younger.
