In all seriousness, I don't know - or I can't give you a justifiable answer within the framework we're working under in modern academia. As you said, there isn't a monetary incentive for this sort of thing. I know in literary studies, there is basically zero incentive to create good work, only to create 'novel' hypothesis in vogue with what is currently going on. Doesn't help that lit studies are, a lot of the time, basically dropouts and fags that decided they only will read a set of books and don't branch out. IMO Lit and Psych are the two fields that require the broadest knowledge base to get into, because you have to tie so much together, but that doesn't seem to be the general consensus anymore.
