It's not Nirvana that killed it, but the engine behind alt-rock, which was genre hybridisation since the 80s.

So it's those underground bands like Pixies, REM from the 80s that 'killed rock' because they established the new recipe for rock to be transplanting a bit of pop, or a bit of 50s rocknroll but ironically, a bit of metal into a form that was as hybrid as possible.

Nirvana merely became a synthesis of that 80s dynamic, thanks to Cobain's songwriting skills. But even without Nirvana, rock would have still gone through the alt-rock phase and faded out afterwards. Because the undercurrents were already set since the 80s, there was no escaping that vortex.
