Because inks are considered pretty old-school, while also being harder to control than Contrasts or washes. They're definitely worth the work in my opinion, I often mix a little white ink in with white paints to make it flow and bring up the color a little. Payne's Grey is good for blacklining mecha and making shadow tones.
