>I thought that was a yank redesign
The British Pattern 1913 trials rifle in .276 Enfield was first modified to .303 as an emergency measure during WW1, and put into production in three factories in the USA as the Pattern 1914 rifle. Then when the USA got actively into the war in 1917 we converted the Pattern 1914 to .30-'06 as the Model 1917 in order to supplement the supply of the US M1903 rifles from the US government's arsenal.
Funny thing is the British originally started their Lee-Enfield replacement project by taking a US M1903 and modifying it with features that they preferred. They wanted a Mauser-action rifle but they were just too proud to actually use a Mauser-brand Mauser.
