aos is a lot more representitive when it comes to female minis and armies, especially amongst the elfs. old world is much more curmudgeonly historical and traditional fantasy armies of all men so i think you'd have a rougher time finding a good fit there.
for aos, depending on your budget, the best entry point is probably spearhead. spearheads are small armies in a box, it is a preconstructed format where you dont have to worry about list building or too many options, you just play the contents of the box in small 1v1 games that take about an hour to resolve. you can get that down to 45 minutes or even a half hour if you both really learn the rules well but an hour is more realistic. the game is played on a smaller foldout board so its more easy to play on a kitchen table sized space if you need to, its about 2 feet wide.
as far as paints go, i would recommend proacryl, warpaint fanatic, 2 thin coats, vallejo, or AK brands. i would generally not recommend citadel brand as it tends to have terrible consistency issues and its pots dont seal well, i would avoid army painter non-warpaint fanatic brand as its just bad paint. check youtube for painting tutorials, there are a ton of intro tutorials these days. i would avoid contrast workflows to start as they are sort of a beginner trap, with all sorts of unexpected pitfalls and difficulties due to the translucent nature of the paint.
