Amusingly if I recall the RL Anne was the actual writer and artist, and if I remember right SHE stepped down and find a new artist to continue working on it. I don't really remember any major drama over this, so I guess she just got tired of doing it? Going of the current staff page, Robin is still the assistant writer and colorist, with some other dudes being the main writer and artist now.

Hearing this now, it all really fit with the TV show vibe I got from the comic to the point where i think they legit tried to treat it like Ranma or Sabrina as some real IP that they could grow beyond the comic, but either misaligned their expectations or misjudged what they could actually accomplish and botched their growth by overstretching themselves. Sort of reminds me of some of the less crazy rumors of what happened to the late 2000s internet musician Dr. Steel and why he disappeared.
