Season one Lapis was damaged but she had a sense of humor and was gentle and sad when talking to Steven one on one despite her brief decent into villainy.
The cunty stuff only started when she showed back up post-Jasper rape and most of the time the show acted like was sympathetic despite her being awful 95% of the time. The one time she wasn't supposed to be is the episode where she took the barn and it was implied that Peri was scared of her which felt like an intentional way to finally destroy the barning and Zuke's attempts at pairing the two up.
Basically she was an incredibly botched character even by SU standards.
