English has a lot of linguistic peculiarities because England was colonized by a bunch of different tribes and kingdoms over time and they essentially just blended it all into a kind of German & French pidgin with some Gaelic sprinkled in, so if you ever see a word that doesn’t really make sense or is spelled weirdly then there’s a good chance it’s because it’s a French or German word.
