I think that is partly because it’s a relatively new language. Most of the other languages I have studied or dabbled in were essentially constructed by autistic monks ~1000+ years ago and they had good enough record keeping and a culture of professional scribes who sort of passively informed/enforced the linguistic rules of their language over time. The english we speak today only really came about like 300-500ish years ago, and I think that’s largely due to the printing press. Most romance languages exist because of Roman soldiers enforcing the speaking of Latin in colonized parts of the Roman empire, which evolved into “Vulgar Latin” which is why so many European languages share root words. You also have to kind of remember that for most of Europe in the Middle Ages the average person didn’t read books besides the Bible (if they even knew how to read). When the printing press was invented only like 15% of the population could read, and they were mostly clergy, scholars, and aristocrats.

Modern Icelandic is almost exactly the same language Vikings spoke, which is interesting to me because it survived the crusades. A lot of Germanic languages have a lot of mutually intelligible words. Like a neat example is in the show Mr robot the character Tyrell Wellick (Martin Wallström ) and his wife Joanna Wellick (Stephanie Corneliussen) are regularly shown speaking to each other privately in another language that gets subtitled for the audience, but the interesting thing about that is Stephanie is Danish IRL, and Martin is Swedish IRL. They’re both speak a different language to each other on set and in story but it just so happens to work for the story because Dutch and Swedish share like 80% of their vocabulary. I don’t think the director originally intended for that Easter egg, but it’s neat to think about.
