WoW has been #2 since 2021, nothing changed between gay centaurs and nignogelves. Neither expansion had some event where WoW players returned in droves. Just the same old whales who were playing in Shadowlands.

And I say this as someone who has spent a grand total of 3 hours in XIV total and never liked the game. It's just obviously more popular.
