WoW has been #2 since 2021, nothing changed between gay centaurs and nignogelves. Neither expansion had some event where WoW players returned in droves. Just the same old whales who were playing in Shadowlands.

Most classes don't have a core rotational set of more than like five abilities. The big problem (and I'm sympathetic to Blizzard here because a design thing you have to deal with is players WANT their classes to have new things or to improve in some aspect across expansions and we're 20+ years in) is passive creep. I think a lot of people can understand that you build up holy power and then press storm or build up shards then press chaos bolt but even the most braindead specs (I feel like BM is the one example where it doesn't suffer from this) are loaded with three dozen small passive things attached to every ability.

MM is a pretty braindead spec that follows a very simple 1-2-1-2-1-2 pattern where 99.99% of the time the right play is always to get then consume precise shots but, due solely to there being 30 fucking passives in play here, there are very niche instances where it's not the play. In fucking up a global where you consume when you shouldn't have is like a .2% dps loss but it's a small thing and I feel every single class in the game is built up a hundred little passives that create niche but ultimately relevant scenarios where "the thing you have been trained by your class to do all the time was wrong".

I've been playing this game since February 2005 when my dad got it to me as a gift for being a good boi who went to the dentist.

After I got it I was totally hooked, and played more or less every day until like late 2009 in middle Wrath where I started to get less and less enjoyment out of it. I still played in Cataclysm but it was noticeably more sporadic and subsequent expansions like MoP, WoD, and Legion I all played heavy amounts but very sporadically, and far less than the first 5 years. I think BfA was when my addiction really came to a crawl and I barely played. Shadowlands I gave it a shot and enjoyed it up to Nathria but quit after killing Denthrius and didn't bother coming back in 9.1. DF and TWW I have barely enjoyed I don't feel like WoW at all to me, feels like I'm playing fanfiction. Actually that feeling really started in Shadowlands.

What was the moment I should have called it quits for good? I still like WoW in concept but the execution is just not for me. I haven't enjoyed the endgame in years and my capacity for PvP was burned out after s4 of TBC with my nerd-raging healer and s6 where I fell out with both teammates unfortunately.

Theming one expansion so heavily around a single concept is always a mistake. Cataclysm was also a dragon expansion, but it had so much more going on beyond that. This is something Wrath excelled at: not only did the villains feel varied despite how easy it'd be to just throw Scourge everywhere, but nearly every playable race got some kind of representation or storyline.

Obviously scope creep makes the latter much less tenable, but I question how much their focus on less zones/cultures/etc. but larger and more fleshed out is actually good. Blizzard as a whole has always been better at style over substance, and I don't think the world-building focus they've shifted to has been worth the almost complete death of anything interesting happening in the main story.

The "plot" is literally just you going with Ve'nari into the eco dome when devourers and some Ethereals who got mad at you during the pre raid campaign invade it to blow it up for no reason other than "mad at you". There's virtually nothing related to the raid. The only connection is the final boss is a character who you piss off with Xally and serves Salhadaar (who is one of the bosses in the raid and seemingly does not die during the raid?) but you spare her in the end.
