WoW has been #2 since 2021, nothing changed between gay centaurs and nignogelves. Neither expansion had some event where WoW players returned in droves. Just the same old whales who were playing in Shadowlands.

Most classes don't have a core rotational set of more than like five abilities. The big problem (and I'm sympathetic to Blizzard here because a design thing you have to deal with is players WANT their classes to have new things or to improve in some aspect across expansions and we're 20+ years in) is passive creep. I think a lot of people can understand that you build up holy power and then press storm or build up shards then press chaos bolt but even the most braindead specs (I feel like BM is the one example where it doesn't suffer from this) are loaded with three dozen small passive things attached to every ability.

MM is a pretty braindead spec that follows a very simple 1-2-1-2-1-2 pattern where 99.99% of the time the right play is always to get then consume precise shots but, due solely to there being 30 fucking passives in play here, there are very niche instances where it's not the play. In fucking up a global where you consume when you shouldn't have is like a .2% dps loss but it's a small thing and I feel every single class in the game is built up a hundred little passives that create niche but ultimately relevant scenarios where "the thing you have been trained by your class to do all the time was wrong".
