They were very good at finding what worked and stubbornly refusing to move away from it. Model years where they had to make big change (introducing a turbo, new transmission option, etc...) are usually iffy. One of the most surprising things about the Prius was that it was so good out of the gate; everyone had expected it to have tons of teething issues, and they just didn't. Of course they ended up blowing head gaskets at 100k until they fixed the piston rings in 2014, but still.
The issue these days is the Toyota Tax. Because even if their current lineup is nowhere near as bulletproof as last decade's, they are pricing in a premium for the aura of 'reliable like no other'. Cross shop with a similar Honda vehicle and you can see how silly it is.
All that to say I want to replace my absolute base model Versa hatchback with a CT200h soon. Because its the fancy Prius.
