I think the issue with Sonic Mania is that the game wasn't really made out of passion nor love for the franchise. It was just something Sega only approved since the majority of Sonic fans(Which were Classic era fans at the time) heavily demanded a proper throwback to the old days of the Genesis. Colors, Gens, Sonic 4: EP1 + EP2, and even Lost World may have pleased them for awhile, but fans WANTED the actual "authentic" Classic Sonic experience, hence Sonic Mania existing. Had Sega simply not bend over backwards for people that only cared for Classic Sonic for a entire decade, we wouldn't have gotten that game at all.
Also speaking of Mania, I always hated the reveal trailer. It pretends that nothing happened between Heroes and Colors, which really shows how the 2010s were dogshit and cynical in nature.
