The animation is noteworthy for being better than most offerings around that same late 90s time period. Whether or not it's "good" is a subjective call.
IMHO, it's watchable, but it doesn't grip me the same way other western stuff does. I think the world of Long Gone Gulch is more imaginative, and Calamity Jane doesn't have the same sort of gritty drama that you'll find in the cinematography of Spaghetti Westerns. I'm not trying to compare feature length live action films to a flash in the pan animated episodes, but I'm specifically talking about the way scenes are paced and how the narrative unfolds. I wish Calamity Jane took more beats to focus on visual aspects. I get that they need to cram a story into the episodic runtime, but I think a couple of moments to set up scenes with focus on backgrounds or more artistic framing of the subjects could have pushed this show over the edge.
I'm also admittedly not super into this design of Calamity Jane and I kind of wish her character was a touch more tortured instead of being so cocksure. I think it would have created a more interesting dynamic.
