I'm pretty sure anon is referring to the shotgun shell spray being a 6x6m (3x3 square) in front of you. But if he misread the rules I can't blame him.

Do you mean shotgun slugs which have this range >>95792027 or the shells variant that only works in front of you? If you think that the slugs are only close range they can get decently far like a handgun. Interestingly, the AR and shotgun are almost inverse in range DV's. So if you had a shotgun who fired Slugs at AR ranges I don't think it would be game breaking. Honestly it might be worse as a shotgun's slugs can't be made incendiary or smart. So you'd be left with an assault rifle that in a pinch could be unloaded and reloaded with shells, that could deal 3d6 to a bunch of enemies in front of you (with the right upgrade your shotgun can switch ammo freely). But if that worried you, you could get an assault rifle with a shotgun frontmount to cover both ranges.

As for shells it is on a long list of rules I misinterpreted because my version just made sense (I used to think the monokatana and railgun could punch through regular Light Armorjack because for 5000eb they fucking better, or that Slide worked on all active Black ICE not just one). Initially I thought the shotgun's shells could drop a 3x3 square of 3d6 death anywhere, you just had to beat that spot's range DV and that also sets the dodge DV (if used by an NPC). So basically a grenade launcher but with much smaller area and half damage but 90% discount (10 bucks for many boolets instead of 100 for an AP grenade). I guess it's an interesting comparison to a heavy handgun that could potentially deal gangbuster damage to a tightly packed group of enemies but only once/enemy. But it could also be a fun homebrew gun, some kind of small vermin crowd control shotgun because when you're fighting hordes of enemies you'll get many inside the 3x3 kill square.
