I mean, isn't that a problem with the writers lack of creativity? If BVR is dangerous and realistic- you'd set up interception systems- early warning systems- advanced radar- Stealth technology to get around it. Etc.
You could use a devastating BVR barrage to wipe a station out and the character just so happened to be outside when it happens.
