Because the Germans never intended to invade the UK, expecting them to sign a cease fire and thus had no capability to invade. The Battle of Britain was an off-the-cuff operation hoping to shoot down enough Brit fighters that the Germans would have the time to hurry up and slap together some kinda invasion force.

But had the Germans planned on invading from the start, the Brits would have been the ones flying long distances into German held skies in an attempt to stop them and they'd have been fucked.
