From my understanding the original 3 families just wanted to reach the root together. Then they realized the ritual only allowed 1 person to enter the root so they started killing each other. Then they killed each other too good so they added all these rules and spells and servants to make it more fun. And at some point they decided to fool other people into joining the fight by lying that the grail grants wishes which they themselves started believing except the Tohsakas and maybe Einzberns.

And the Root is some ancient magical energy from before 11000BC that allowed Gods to walk among the earth but they disappeared when people stopped believing in them. So the Einzberns waited literal thousands of years to come up with an idea to make this Grail.

I could go on but even I don't know wft I'm even talking about. Is this even cannon anymore.
