Sonic 1 is nothing but slow sections. The game reaches its peak on the first level as it actually feels like it was designed with Sonic going fast. I think you saying that you have to replay the zones non stop to go fast was not the dev's intentions with the level design and honestly it's no different than going fast and skipping past stuff in a Mario game.
