it's a little hard to describe but in terms of the actual combat anime Xcom is the simplest way to describe it that isn't wrong.
There's no permadeath/create a characters, all units you control are characters in the story and each have their own unique abilities/stat growths etc. The character you start with is a melee swordsman with a couple of (limited) ranged options. Depending on how you build him (the game has a MASSIVE amount of build tweaking/customization) you can make him a mega tank melee combatant with raw block power+stats, a hit and run striker that can blow people up with a ranged attack if he gets a clear angle, a much less tanky but extremely high lifesteal assassin, etc.
Some characters are a bit more restrained, for example while you CAN make the 2nd character you unlock into a more melee/physical damage focused playstyle, he is very clearly aligned towards being a glass cannon magic artillery nuker.
I strongly recommend the game if xcom with premade units that can get absolutely unbelievably powerful (relative to standard xcom units) as you power them up but enemies still remain threatening AS LONG AS you play on Cruel difficulty, which i recommend.
