Maria being human is one of the only things keeping Shadria down. I know it'd blow up if she were turned into a blobian (although I don't like her being a hedgehog, too generic of a species).
I personally like that she's human though. Shadow and Maria being so different both personality-wise and physically makes their bond more special. They didn't give a shit that they looked different from each other because the heart matters more than the body.
