Oh, that's a great idea. We see him by her bedside after all. He stands there at her bedside like a silent protector, eventually she tells him to sit down on the bed with her. Then lay down with her. And when her arms wrap around him, Shadow doesn't want to wake her so her stays put, slowly realizing he enjoys it too. Maybe it would help with Maria's stress and symptoms, so the ARK staff would allow it. I feel like they'd wake Shadow up to drag him away for testing sometimes though.
I still wish we knew more about their day-to-day life on the ARK before the tragedy. Last few years have given us valuable insight, but we still don't know if Shadow had his own room or what.
It's sad to think that's the only real physical affection Shadow's gotten in his life, and since his heart's been broken he doesn't trust anyone else to give him that physical affection.

My favorite part is how Shadow struggles to even comprehend romance and life to begin with. Since Maria is the only one who really attempts to try and get Shadow to understand, she more or less plays the role of his sole guide to happiness. Yeah, that's a big part of it for me too. Some people here will use "Maria is dead" to attack the shippers, but I don't think they realize that's half the appeal. Shadow's tragedy is heartbreaking. And since Shadow has her 'soul', you could literally call them soulmates, couldn't you?
That longing for a love that's gone is so bittersweet. Without her, maybe he'd be the cold unfeeling monster everyone but her assumed he was. They had such a positive impact on each other in such a hopeless scenario. I think the depth of that love is something special.

Maybe if Sega had been more consistent about it themselves, but starting with heroes and afterwards they themselves have been all over the map. That is not to say some interpretations havent been more wildly off, but boiling it down to an east/west thing is just an outdated way of realizing the problem at this point, and has been for a while.

There WAS a hyper specific way all the way up until around Black Knight, when SEGA let themselves be convinced that Sonic wasn't supposed to have a story or a supporting cast, and that being a self hating joke of a franchise was the only way forward.
And Sonic Team WAS consistent about it, even after all the attempts from people overseas trying to change the characters on a whim by changing scripts and manuals, they still kept things consistent with their scripts and things like Sonic Channel.
The only reason you can even say that Sonic was never consistently written is because you've let yourself get used to people purposefully trying to ruin any sort of consistency.

Alright here's some information, not all of it though because there really is a lot. The follow up to Sonic Frontiers will finally ditch the boost system to something more like Adventure and the 2D games. Momentum and rolling physics, etc. Expect the spindash to return. Kishimoto has always been a fan of the Sonic Adventure and Classic games but Sonic Team has been pressured to keep using the boost by SEGA corp. Sonic Team is finally getting more levarage to do what they want. Open world will stay but platforming sections will be better integrated into the actual world itself.

There's way more to this but that's the basic gist of what's going on, there's also more misc. information about internal discussions within SEGA and Frontiers development information, etc. Just thought I'd geat ahead of the curve and post some things here so that when the rest comes out you know it's real. Just remember you heard it here first.
