mario showing romantic interest in peach factually makes it romantic at least from Mario's side, that alone is enough to make people speculate the romance of the two. the other little things nintendo does doesn't help either like the line stickers. you can't just dip your toe in out with something like this, the fact that it has blown up again is proof of that.
