It's one thing if they don't define their relationship in a vacuum, but when presented with a couple they flat out state that their relationship is NOT like that. It's not even a case of "I'm not a lesbian, I only love that particular girl" either, because they seem to think whatever relationship between them is not romantic in nature. Why doing this "open to interpretation" shit in the last minute?
