I think the most likely scenario is the mom is trying to make sure the divorce is granted. In Japan, both parties must agree to a divorce. Naoi's dad clearly won't. The mother can still push for the courts to grant the divorce, but she'd have to prove Naoi's dad is abusive. If she can't, then the divorce might not be granted and even if it was, she'd be the one seen as being at fault for her abandonment and infidelity.

Naoi might be a pawn. It's hard to prove the dad is that abusive, if she left Naoi with him all of this time. So, she's likely only agreeing to take Naoi in now to make the dad look worse and to make herself look better.

Also, if a woman has a baby within 300 days of her divorce, then the baby is legally considered to be the husband's baby. Meaning, she basically has to prove Naoi's dad is abusive, or she's in serious trouble.

There's only so much you can do with a premise like that. Gochiusa has been running for like, what, 15 years now? Most SOL series can only dream of running that long, mostly because they aren't built for it.

Well, look at its kirara max contemporaries. Both kinmoza and new game stood true to their roots, developed a story, didn't overstay their welcome and ran for 11ish volumes, ending when it was mostly appropriate. Gochiusa should have ended ages ago. IMO, ideally, it should have ended with the out of town trip volume. The twins and Fuyu were an attempt at revitalizing the manga but their introduction coincided with the start of the awful "now every single character gets to have 4 panels" structure. If it ended with the trip, it would have been an amazing ending, like kinmoza did with the UK trip or new game with the FS4 release.
It's just tiring at this point. Every month I get to see how what was one of my all time favourite series sinks lower and lower into commercial slop that's only written because it prints money.
