>She knows she's torturing him but does it anyway. That's not who she is, but the ending demanded she turn into this cruel torture god just for the sake of drama. I just didn't buy it.
This is an interesting take and one I've seen a few times.
I think it's hard to tell who exactly she is. She seems a bit more selfish and deluded in Act III once she becomes Maellecia when you do a lot of the side content.
I don't think what she's doing to Verso comes from being malicious though. She can not comprehend that he wants to die and not exist. I mean, how could you comprehend that from anyone, especially someone that looks exactly like your brother that you just remembered died? Especially when he's been saying for all of Act III how he wants to make amends to the people he lied and work towards a future for Lumiere.
She's not a cruel torture god, she just wants painted Verso to live and to do the thing he wanted to do which was to play music.
But the ending is tragic, just like the Verso ending, because painted Verso doesnt want to live and the ending basically paints him as Maelle's puppet. Both endings are tragic and there is no good ending, this was the intended outcome by the game writers.
I do think you have to put yourself in Maelle's shoes to understand why she keeps Verso alive. It's not so simple as being wicked and manipulative. She just can't cope with the fact that he wants to die. How would you deal with the fact that your sibling wants to die? Wouldn't you want to save them too? Surely you wouldn't just say yeah kill yourself if you really feel like it right?
Both of these endings have absolutely brilliant writing. Even though they both end in tragedies they both show their own advantages and disadvantages and the perspective of Maelle and Verso for why they do what they do in their perspective endings.
