You swallow hard. This might be a problem. It’ll show up as an anomaly in their investigation, something that doesn’t quite fit. Thinking back, you realize bringing him strawberry milk every day might have looked like a sign of friendship, at least from an outsider’s point of view.

"Who knows," you say, managing to keep your voice even. "I wish I could help more."

She nods, writes something in her notebook, then stands. "That’s all for now. Thank you for your time." She leaves without another word.
