Except music that gets insincere followers is stuff that's "fashionable" to listen to, not falsely sold as esoteric. The faggots who shilled The Strokes to the top of the US charts were just pretending and following along with what critics said. Far weirder and dumber and less accessible music than fucking Trout Mask has had followings. I don't get the appeal behind Throbbing Gristle and think they sound silly at their best but they built a following of diehards and a lot of way better bands site them as foundational.
