i guess its the feel of playing as them
when the character is a vessel for experience you get the feel of being a death machine like doomguy or a scared shitless scientist when tits are up like gordon freeman

when a charachter is "given" a personality it can ruin your connection to the setting you're experiencing
like imagine playing fallout but instead of building your character and living through the world like they would, your character is written for you and you're forced to see things through their interaction, its not necessarily bad but it really relies on the competency of the writter
