Portraits served documentarian purposes, so this would be the equivalent of politicians refusing press photos for an event. Why do you think they refused to pose for the painting?

And you might bring an interesting point regarding their aversion for monarchy, but you need to remember that at the time, Freemasons were a relatively small club, it's during the decades that lead to the French revolution that they started to grow in very large numbers, and so developped a larger network too...
But I get your point even though it is not really historically accurate as described above, but when you said "retarded", well, Louis XIV didn't promptly gave the go for the expedition and help oversea at first...
You have to keep in mind that at the time, France was in a very long "war" against the British, since immemorial times, and helping the US to get their independance was also a way to defund the Brits from their New World possessions in favor to a new Nation that shared a lot of ideas/principles in common with France...
So it was a clear choice but he has a lot of doubts, thought about it for quite some time and then gave his green light...
