but
>wanted to see something remotely attractive when I look in the mirror
is exactly the kind of mindset i'm talking about, where you start caring about the 3D world, which is entirely my point. desu, i'm not even saying it's a bad thing, if you're happier now, whatever - good for you.
but back then, we were all young and could pretend we didn't give a fuck about the future until it came for us. and most of us (myself included) folded and chose something to do that wasn't the promised hedonistic "forever alone" nihilism that people always boasted about. im sure you still care about the things you cared about, as do I. but that's not what people are talking about here, or at least it's not what i'm talking about. what i think people miss is that the kind of shamelessly self indulgent zeitgeist that didn't care about the real world at all and put all their passion into a complete fantasy, regardless of how other people would see it. A fantasy that was free of both desire and resentment towards reality, because otaku just didn't really care about what would come tomorrow. We could do that because we were young, the same kind of otaku that miyazaki whined about, with the whole bit he had about looking down on otaku for not caring or looking at people in real life.
but going back to the beginning, i'm not passing judgment on anyone for changing, because that would be hypocrisy on my part. the real tragedy is that the most of the next generation has zero interest in living like that. to be honest, i can't even lay the blame completely at their feet either. it's hard to live with such foolish bravado when the world is actively burning around you.

just because you may or may not be an exception doesn't mean there aren't swathes of people on this website from the early 2000s that kept larping as little girls and 2hus until they eventually wanted to become one.
