Khazaria has been denting the Karlings since the start. They nearly got the middle east too, I hoped they would form Israel but the Abassids locked in and push them back.
I tried to even help the Karlings at some point but hordes mechanics just stomp anyone at the start. The Karlings were intelligent enough to white peace when things went very sour.
