As someone who's been to Russia several times and who's half-Russian myself I just don't get it. Are they stupid? Are they so contrarian that they think one side must be good (rather than both sides being le bad)?

What if Russia got crippled during the 1500s/1600s and remained a local regional power that never conquered Siberia? Who'd do it? Could the Chinese pull it off? Would the British even stake some claim? Would Turkic countries form during modernity and extend their reach to the Arctic Ocean?
