t. oldfag who liked Sonic as a kid then dropped off and has been playing 3D Sonics recently

I'm currently trying to get 06 for the PS3 and the waggle games at 2nd hand stores. I don't think I'm a Sonic fan proper because except for the ones I got nostalgia for, I don't tend to enjoy these games more on replay, but I get why people would. Plus I'm just curious about why these games' fanbases have persisted so much and festered into such a volatile warzone despite their rocky history, unlike other much better 16 but Sega franchises like Streets of Rage and Shinobi.

This was my first thought. Imagine any fanbase other than Metal Gear's who flat out refuses to engage with the first entries in the series. Sonigs are definitely not as bad in this regard, your average one has at least tried 3, or played 1 once to say they don't liked it.
