Farmers in the West are responsible for land degradation and biodiversity loss on a massive scale and have done so since land consolidation started in the 50-60s. Meanwhile many countries in the Global South are able to meet food demands using less conventional and industrial methods which emit a fraction of the CO2 emitted in the West (with the exception of drought ridden countries in Africa predominantly who depend on imports to meet demand). To think that just because farmers produce food, they should not be held accountable to standards that protect to common good is a nonsense.
