what chainlink labs currently offers is "cool tech"
this cool tech works. awesome. the tech is open source code and running it isn't particularly resource intensive
you could spin up a node and start delivering data. no one would subscribe. no one would pay. worse, no one would use it for free. There would be no incentive for a node not in Chainlink™'s whitelist to report correct data vs the reward of gaming any protocol relying on that data.
The value of the Chainlink™ network is currently captured by the friction of "just trust me bro". You have to be on a list to run a node. You have to be vetted and known. Chainlink wouldn't work to deliver truth if anyone could spin up a node
The promise of chainlink from the beginning has been that truth can be delivered without the friction of that social trust. The original proposal to deliver this involved cryptoeconomic incentives.
Exploring this unknown and untested frontier is the reason linkies hold
