The timeline shift in 2.0 is kino because Shinji actually rises up to the expectations until he gradually goes full Gendo and would have cemented rebuild series as actual continuation of EVA if 3 and 4 had followed that.
The whole point was Shinji realized the ending he was cursed to follow but found the strength to change it by choosing to fight of his own volition for the very first time ever. This hubris shouldn't have probably led to a positive outcome, but it would have been interesting to actually explore this different timeline.
And then 3.0 brings him back to square 1 doing a 360 and bullying him for actually taking a stand, taking away who he fought for while the audience knows full well the Third Impact would have occurred either way.
