It's funny you bring this up. My minivan's AC has a slow leak. Last owner provided a stack of receipts, and the car had a bunch of AC diag work done not long before I purchased it. Eventually it started blowing warm, so I brought it to a mechanic twice. Couldn't find any leaks, but replaced the shaft seal on the compressor. Now it's starting to blow warm again. If two real mechanics couldn't diagnose the leak, then I have no chance.
What I'm thinking about doing is purchasing picrel and replacing the refrigerant with propane. I'll top it off a couple of times a year. Should be cheaper than R-134a, and blow way colder. Apparently the fire risk is overstated since it's such a small amount of propane, and it's a gas that burns off pretty safely.
