I like the idea. Its got ties to real-world history and actual currency (and currency issues. I remember a basic forex market was something the devs wanted to implement in NV, but, y'know, time crunch.) and makes the world a lot more interesting.
I also want to put in the ring, if there is some sort of centralized government (a la the NCR or the Commonwealth Provisional Govt.) then they could also issue paper currency. (A la civil war era "Graybacks" issued by the CSA, but, y'know, not a wartime currency) Poker chips are a good idea too, imo.
