comics literally did that to themselves and tossed reboots, universe realignments, and all other kinds of shit. You can't get mad at fans when the writers/company itself pretends that these are comprehensive stories with build up and consequences. They could have just kept going with episodic, loosely contained stuff but they pivoted into more serious and continuous story telling
