Corporate greed. I'm not even a pinko lefty, but on the air (and especially with syndication), there's more competition and people give a fuck about ratings. Streaming and "prestige tv" lock people into walled gardens. A comparable example is the Internet before the walled gardens of CompuServe, Prodigy and AOL. Stream slop is just Endless September for TV.
