>>211511976>but you're really saying that giving the audience what they want is somehow badExcept they're not giving the audience what they want. They're just cynically exploiting your nostalgia. You think they actually care? They probably have an AI that is doing all this shit for them, which is why whenever they do memberberries they get the facts wrong.
I'd rather have Star Trek that is honest about shitting on me than Star Trek that is shitting on me but gaslighting me about it. All these shows shit on the audience in some way. Except Prodigy maybe because it's made by legit fucking autismos. And predictably Paramount gave them the middle finger.
>>211511353All TV shows are like this now. I don't understand what happened to Hollywood. They used to pump out 24 episodes a year for 7 years straight, and they were way higher quality in every aspect than what passes for TV today. Did everyone in the industry just become completely incompetent and retarded?
>>211512280>They probably have an AI that is doing all this shit for them, which is why whenever they do memberberries they get the facts wrong.Kek I showed this screenshot to Grok and it told me the photo was of Q. That's the artificial "intelligence" they have overseeing scripts over at Paramount +
>>211512330>Did everyone in the industry just become completely incompetent and retarded?Corporate greed. I'm not even a pinko lefty, but on the air (and especially with syndication), there's more competition and people give a fuck about ratings. Streaming and "prestige tv" lock people into walled gardens. A comparable example is the Internet before the walled gardens of CompuServe, Prodigy and AOL. Stream slop is just Endless September for TV.
>>211512330Nothingโs changed in terms of production. They still make these things in batches of 20 episodes. But the streaming model necessitates that they drip feed the episodes to keep the cattle subscribed.
>>211512330They were trying to hit the "100 episodes so we can get residuals from syndication" mark in the old days, that is specifically what was special about the 25 episode per season mark, why some had less, some had more -- always it was with the drive of hitting 100 in mind.
They were originally going to cancel DS9 after S5 according to Michael Dorn, if he had not been brought in. They specifically just wanted to hit 100 episodes, send it to syndication, and forget about it.

>>211512517nobody would think to drop their sub if there were new episodes every week for 6 months.
the reason they dont make long seasons anymore is because it costs less to make the 8 hour movies and HBO conditioned consoomers into believing that format is inherently better than episodic commerical television
>>211512517I think they make an 8 episode first season to test the waters. Then if it's a hit, they shoot two more seasons back to back, causing a shorter hiatus. Netflix One Piece isn't coming back until 2026. Which means the actors will be well into their thirties trying to play teenagers. The model is so broken that a show can be on the air 10 years and not even produce 50 episodes.

I never understood why people say Masks is one of the worst TNG episodes. Sure, it's your typical "Brent Spiner gets to act hammy again" episodes, but it's such a bizarre, out-there plot featuring a truly alien civilization that takes a while for our heroes to understand. >>211525125For lack of an obvious Earth armed force, the Federation is left to deal with everything. Also, the ships are armed well enough to glass any planet they see on a whim.
>>211525233I think in canon, they came from a Naval tradition according to ENT.
But NASA isn't a military and even they have ranks and structure.
Ultimately they're more than one thing, they don't really fit neatly into the definitions we currently have for military or civilians. Everyone in Starfleet would agree that their job is defence of the Federation. Everyone would also agree that their job is to explore, chart, meet new species and undertake diplomatic missions. The emphasis of those two jobs seems to change depending on who is writing the show.
>>211525125>Functions exactly like every navy on earth but in space>Has naval infantry>Has black ops division>Every ship is armed>Is deployed to deal with conflict>No guys I swear Starfleet is NOT militaryRoddenberry didn't think that one through.
>>211525781didn't he actually fight in a war? i think i get where he was coming from. he probably has a different perspective on the military and what it is i.e. it exists to kill the enemy. obviously that's not Starfleet
>>211525480Late 80s alcoholic several mini-strokes Roddenberry wasn't the most reliable guy in various ways. He no show'd things constantly, said outrageous weird things in interviews (like his famous weird pedo comments), and pretty much handed over day-to-day operations of everything (including TNG S1) to his lawyer who took full advantage of his failing health.
He was kind of a mess all throughout TNG up until that last major stroke finally put him out of commission for good sadly.
>>211525781Section 31 works for the Federation, not Starfleet. Starfleet is an organisation founded by Zeffren Cochrane and Henry Archer and predates the Federation. They are managed by the Federation in later years but they're distinct. The terms aren't interchangeable.
And technically the fleet didn't have weapons on their ships originally. Nor can Navy captains on Earth negotiate treaties or make independent decisions
>>211515291it's a bot that makes threads and replies to itself
lee has been dead for a decade
>>211525747You know, Starfleet and the Federation sort of act like there's still a separation between civilians and non-civ like Starfleet officers, but in practice that doesn't actually seem to be the case, as they're fully willing to screw over civilian populations like that time Sisko gassed a planet, and they keep "civilian" staff aboard all their major vessels outside of possibly the Dominion War.
>>211510745 (OP)I liked Disco after the timeskip
>>211526087I don't know, anon, TOS has a very distinctly military feel to it. Sure, they're exploring but the Enterprise itself and its operation is absolutely militant. The hierarchy of Starfleet is military. The uniforms, the jackboots, the way the ship operates.
And the TOS Enterprise is the definitive Enterprise that established all canon that followed.
>>211526205The exploration thing is basically what the Royal Navy was doing for 100 years but on a much bigger scale.
>>211526205To be fair, they didn't really have a handle on the show and lore in TOS. Kirk called himself a soldier sometimes. But he also claimed to work for Space Command, the United Earth Spaceforce and other things before they nailed down Starfleet as the name.
>>211526432they were calling it THE Starfleet at first kek
>>211526293For the benefit of the Crown and the EIC, not purely exploration for its sake
>>211526432The semantics of what the organization is called is irrelevant to whether or not it was portrayed as military or not. It was definitely military in TOS.
>>211526538Are you implying Starfleet exploration isn't for the benefit of the Fed?
>>211525125Starfleet is a multipurpose military-exploratory-policing-diplomatic service. It fills whatever role the Federation needs at any time, whether it's fighting a war or resolving internal disputes or conducting scientific research. The naval structure is just the most convenient system to encompass all that. I don't get how so many fans rack their brains about this when it's so simple and not contradictory at all. Starfleet *can be* but is *not necessarily* a military organization.
>>211512330>Did everyone in the industry just become completely incompetent and retarded?Yes, actually.
Hollywood is an incestuous shithole where it's who you know rather than your talent. Daddies little girl wasn't talented or slutty enough to fuck her way to stardom even with financial backing from her father, but she wrote some horrificly terrible fanfictions as a teenager and got a bachelors in artistic writing!
>>211526550I k ow, I'm just pointing out that they were still figuring things out in terms of how the Universe worked in TOS whereas TNG was much more confident in the lore
>>211526740>whereas TNG was much more confident in the loreOnce Roddenberry himself was out of the way, ironically enough, yeah. But the old man had some wild, uncompromising ideas about the TNG Starfleet at first which didn't really gel with the overall lore in TOS or the movies. No internal conflict whatsoever in Starfleet, all of that. Would've made for a very boring show.
>>211526897Roddenberry really started buying into his own cult in the 18 years between TOS and TNG and believing he was indeed a prophet of some better future. He envisioned TNG primarily as a vehicle for his utopian ideas and demanded every single aspect of the show be in service to portraying 24th century civilization as an enlightened and virtually flawless paradise where petty conflicts are no more and compassion and empathy rule the day.
>>211527092and today we live in a world where empathy and compassion are seen as contemptible and weak
>>211513032Wouldn't that be all the way to the left to keep the line flowing?
>>211510745 (OP)Reminder: NuNuTrek Enterprise is powered by mushrooms.
Space mushrooms.
Someone wrote this, someone approved this.
>>211527488I ignore all Trek made after the end of the Bernan era. And all the TNG movies too.
They're not canon, they are Riker playing games in a holodeck
should I watch VOY or ENT first
>>211527606Watch all series in the order they were created.
>>211527238Well, too much of anything is bad for you. I think even Kirk said that.
>>211527655well i already haven't done that but those are the last 2 shows i haven't watched yet
>>211527606Honestly doesn't really matter. But whichever order you do, I suggest a significant break between the 2, otherwise Braga's time travel schtick gets old fast.
>>211527488They even named the chief engineer after the mushroom guy. FFS guys the saying is "write what you know" not "write what you heard in a podcast the other night".
>>211527845Imagine someone hijacking your identity and turning you into a faggot on national television.
>>211527488Exotic forms of propulsion isn't a sin.
Putting it in a prequel... well that's just... I have nothing nice to say about that.
>>211527488Not the Enterprise though, desu
Itโs a fucking military.
>>211530402It's a mix.
On a ship of 1000 people, most of them are feeble lab technicians in a carpeted office space, hoping to complete harmless experiments and measurements in space.
The people commanding the bridge, are space navy, roaming around the galaxy looking for trouble.
>>211530586do you think the military doesn't employ scientists?
Wouldn't a military have grooming standards?
>>211532519Yes. Which is why he never looked like that and they fought all the wars
>>211532519That is how O'Brien nearly ended up in Cardassian prison.
