True, more or less. Hebrews before Jesus were essentially pre-Christian Christians awaiting their messiah. He came and his name was Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God. Hebrews were divided because of Talmudic (Oral law) Pharisees, the Oral Law taught by the Pharisees was exactly why Christ called them the Synagogue of Satan, only for this Oral Law to be written down centuries later and became what we know as Talmud today. So half (give or take) of the Hebrew population during Christ’s time on Earth became followers of Christ, the other half kept following the Talmudic Pharisees. All Jews today are descended of the Pharisees, which is why they vehemently hate Jesus Christ.

Israel today is the Church, more specifically, the Orthodox Church.
