Martin made the series as a sort of "fuck you" to Tolkien because he hated everything about LoTR and how positive and hopeful it seemed to have made everything, so he wanted to just do the complete opposite of it, not realizing that the opposite to a theme and message surrounding that of hope and perseverance rooted in Christian doctrine is that of misery and demonic imagery though the exaltation of sin as something to strive for, like how he keeps putting sex and rape scenes everywhere and continues to just make everything bleak and feeling hopeless and shit to the point it may or may not start eating at your soul at some point and cause you to you yourself give up and start being a cynical twat.
There's a very specific reason the show itself failed and Martin himself will never get to finish his books, as opposed to LoTR actually finishing all its movie anthology and Tolkien actually having finished his book in full.
